The 17 January 2015 ATER workshop served to introduce teachers to the possibilities available when they use “authentic materials,” or materials created for a purpose other than language learning. Participants discussed the purpose of using newspapers, magazines, advertisements, even receipts and labels printed in English. With practice using an English edition of the Rwandan paper, The New Times, participants were able to learn techniques for using challenging materials in order to introduce their students to the “English world” outside of the classroom. About 25 English teachers from Kicukiro district attended this workshop
The above workshop is part of a series of continous development workshops ATER is ipmlementing in 5 districts (Kicukiro, Nyarugenge, Muhanga, Rwamagana, and Musanze).
